He was secretary of the NMSRFR for 25 years until his retirement in 2001 and was then made an honorary life member of the society.

Although he played rugby at King Edward VI School, Five Ways, John Burgum never played club rugby. He became a touch judge while studying at Exeter University, where he was also secretary of the rugby club, and joined the Devon Society of Referees in 1946.

He returned to Birmingham the following year and enjoyed a long and successful career as a referee which included taking charge of the North East v All Blacks match at Harrogate in 1963.

John Burgum was also appointed touch judge for an France v England Five Nations in match in Paris.

He refereed 36 county matches including a twice replayed semi-final between Cornwall and Surrey.

John Burgum retired from refereeing in 1982, having completed 29 years on the county panel and 36 years of service in all. He continued his active involvement in rugby by becoming a touch judge and referee administrator.

John Burgum, a retired school teacher, was a former resident of Northfield who spent the last year of his life at a retirement home in Northfield.

He leaves a son Jeremy and daughter Claire. His wife predeceased him 13 years ago.

NJH writes "I enjoyed his no nonsense style and worked at maths and it is probably as a result of his hard work i left Greenmore and became a chartered accountant". " I enjoyed most aspects of being part of the Army Cadet Force and again thanks to his support i became a sergeant in the Greenmore detachment of the 10th Royal Warwickshire Battalion.

In 2002 he attended the first of the modern reunions and was the founding chair and president.

He will be missed
