A web-based historical manufacturing research project started by a former Solihull man, Nigel Hinton, Chartered Accountant, has become the inspiration for a book and a play. The story of Silhouette was featured by BBC1 on Inside Out recently.
The play is about to start its second run of performances at the new Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury on 28th February 2010 and has sold out.
The play “Silhouette” features a major manufacturer which manufactured ladies underwear and then utilised new fabrics Nylon and Lycra to transform bulky boned corsets into girdles, that trimmed the waist and held up stockings. The company also designed swimwear and cruisewear in the 1950s and 1960s and exported to over 61 countries.
The story of how the founders, Hans Lobbenberg, Hans Blumenau and their families escaped from Germany to France, where they developed a radio active corset, then moved and bombed out of London and moved to start yet again in Shropshire is compelling.
The story charts the success and growth of a company that expanded rapidly and had eventually had factories in the Midlands, Shropshire, Bristol, Cardiff, Doncaster and Belgium as well as the sales and admin offices in London. Then the decline after fashions changed tights were invented and women started burning their bras.
Nigel said “I have lived through the post war manufacturing boom and worked as an accountant in industry for GKN, the Serck Group and Cray Electronics and seen the growth and then decline of local manufacturing. My interest in the history of the midlands and Shrewsbury in particular drove me to record memories of people who had been involved with manufacturing.” “When I started the project I had no idea that the Silhouette story would be so compelling and resonate with local people so much and that a play and the book would be so popular.” “Without funding by the Arts Council West Midlands and Shropshire Council the play would not have been produced.”
The website is www.madeinshrewsbury.co.uk and the book, Silhouette the story of the Little X, is available to order at all good book shops.

I have had a request from Mr Bryan Homer now of Rugby for information on Farnborough House School . Bryan and his brother were there in 1939/1940and remember being evacuated to Tewkesbury. As far as I know all the Greenmore and related records and photographs ended up in a skip except a few that were liberated by some former pupils who were passing when the skips were being loaded.
Please email me if you have any information on old school documents locations that I can pass onto Bryan.
